The Opening Line

Good morning, Pensacola. We are just a week away from Christmas Eve and it seems like it came way too fast. I was complaining about Christmas music starting early just the other day (maybe I shouldn’t have been so restrictive because now it’s almost gone). Get ready to be with family - and let’s help you find a little fun.

In today’s line:

  • Simple way to give back

  • Fruitcake Alternative, Winterfest, and Holiday Market

  • More things happening around town

  • Great local spots and live music

Embrace the busy and take 30 minutes for calm and quiet this week. On with the newsletter.

The Digest

Family or friends coming into town? Here are two options for a full day out.

Near downtown- BagelHeads for breakfast, on to the Wildlife Sanctuary of NWFL, A Mano Panino for lunch, grab some spray paint (ahead of time) and go to the graffiti bridge (have someone keep an eye on cars), head over to the beach for a walk and check out the shops, and then stop at Nolita’s Parlor on the way home.

In the country - When you are headed out stop at Covington’s Coffee (drive through location in Pace) then on to Alyssa’s, now crossing over towards Molino stop at Jen’s Grill for a late lunch (used to be Jim’s), go north to Steve’s Farm to see what they have in stock (and check out the catfish ponds), as it is getting dark head to Run a Muck Ranch for their walk through Christmas light display.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Florida could use a little help from the community. Their Wish List is full of everyday essentials, treats for Santa’s Workshop, and the small comforts that make a tough season feel a bit lighter. You can grab something straight from their Amazon Wish List. Every item goes directly to families staying right here in Pensacola, and it genuinely makes a difference.

See what we did there? That sailfish fin is a fruitcake. I wanted to muse about fruitcake (and a better alternative) because fruitcake has a quirky place in Pensacola’s history. In the early 1900s, it was a beloved holiday staple in the area — dense, boozy, and often shipped from family to family as a sign of prosperity (and endurance!).

If that candied-fruit brick isn’t your thing, try upgrading your holiday coffee break with panettone. The chocolate-chip variety offers the same festive richness without the neon fruit, giving you a lighter, fluffier—and far more delicious—taste of tradition. Our family is split on the candied fruit one but we do like the mini versions of chocolate chip - if you can find them.

There is only one fruitcake in the entire world, and people keep passing it around.”

- Johnny Carson
Winterfest runs on select nights from Nov. 21 through Dec. 24, with performances, shows, and holiday activities most weekends and weekdays in between. Check the Calendar of Events to see when the major activities occur (or when to avoid them).

Winterfest is ideal for families with kids, couples looking for a romantic seasonal outing, and anyone who loves immersive holiday experiences. It’s especially fun with little ones (hot cocoa, character tours)

Downtown Holiday Market is continuing to run along Palafox through January 4th. Your best time to go is probably Saturday to see the most vendors. Good for visiting friends or family who have not been but we found many of the usual vendors are typically present on Saturdays mornings.

First City Lights Festival - Ongoing now through December 17, downtown lights up for the First City Lights Festival with festive displays, holiday market nights, and seasonal cheer.
