The Opening Line
Good morning, Pensacola.
Summer is close enough now that 30A is worth doing in the next few weeks before it becomes a much more crowded place. This week's Digest is a practical guide to getting down there and spending the day or weekend. We've also got the Mullet Toss this weekend, the PSO's 100th anniversary concert Saturday night, Ani DiFranco at Vinyl for two nights, and a tight calendar of events worth knowing about.
In today's line:
The Digest — A weekend on 30A before the summer crowds hit
Around Town — Events through early May
Beach Day Extra — A shorter day trip option closer to home
The Music Line — Live music across the area

30A Before Summer Gets There
From Pensacola, 30A is about an hour and a half. Close enough for a day trip, but it makes more sense as a weekend. The 24-mile stretch of Scenic Highway 30A runs from Inlet Beach west to Dune Allen, stringing together a string of small beach communities along the Gulf in Walton County, each one with its own personality, its own pace, and its own reasons to stop.
Late April and early May are the right time to go. Spring break crowds have cleared and summer hasn't arrived. Restaurants take walk-ins. Parking exists. The version of 30A you experience right now is quieter, more local, and cheaper than what shows up in June.
Here's how to think about the towns, and what's worth stopping for.
Start on the West End: Blue Mountain and Grayton
Blue Mountain Beach doesn't advertise itself. Blink and you'll miss it. Which is exactly why it tends to be less crowded than the towns to the east. The name comes from the blue lupine wildflowers that used to grow from the dunes here, and it has the highest natural elevation on the Florida Gulf Coast, which sounds like a strange distinction until you're standing on top of a dune looking down at turquoise water in both directions.
Blue Mountain Beach Creamery sits right at the intersection of County Highway 83 and 30A and is one of those places that gets mentioned in nearly every conversation about the area. Homemade ice cream, locally beloved, usually a line but it moves. If you're renting bikes to cruise the Timpoochee Trail, Big Daddy's Bike Shop is right there. For food, Redd's Pub is the kind of low-key live music venue that feels like you found something rather than followed a recommendation.

Just east sits Grayton Beach, which is probably the most authentically "old Florida" town on the whole highway. It still has the feel of a fishing village that got a little bit fancy, which is the best thing a beach town can be. Grayton Beach State Park is one of the better state parks in Florida. 2,000 acres with walking trails, a beach that consistently ranks among the best in the country, and Western Lake, one of the rare coastal dune lakes found only in a handful of places in the world. You can kayak or paddleboard on the lake.
The Red Bar is the institution here. Funky interior, eclectic art all over the walls, live music most nights, good food. It doesn't look like much from outside. Go anyway. Stinky's Fish Camp is the other name that comes up constantly — fresh Gulf seafood, local favorite, expect a wait on weekends.
The Middle: Seaside and Watercolor
Seaside is the famous one. It's the pastel-cottage town used as the filming location for The Truman Show in 1998. The architecture is deliberate and pretty, the whole place is walkable, and the main square has shops, restaurants, and an amphitheater with outdoor movie nights and concerts through the summer.

Modica Market in Seaside is worth knowing about. It's a gourmet grocery and deli that's been there since 1985. Good spot for picking up lunch, coffee, or provisions if you're staying somewhere with a kitchen. Sundog Books next door is a proper independent bookstore. Both are the kind of places you'd drive back to 30A for.
Bud & Alley's rooftop bar is the main event for sunset. The view up the Gulf coastline from the rooftop is genuinely hard to argue with. Go for drinks, not necessarily dinner, unless you've got a reservation.
The Airstream row food trucks in Seaside's main square are worth a stop, especially for lunch. Frost Bites shaved ice is the one people always mention.
The East End: Rosemary and Alys
Rosemary Beach is the more polished end of 30A. Dutch-inspired architecture, cobblestone lanes, boutique hotels, upscale dining. It reads more like a European village than a Florida beach town. Gallion's is the restaurant that serious food people point to on this end.
Alys Beach is next door and takes the architecture one step further - all whitewashed walls and Mediterranean courtyards, residential and quiet. The beach access at Alys is restricted to residents and guests, but the town itself is worth a walk-through just to look at.
Amavida Coffee has outposts scattered along 30A and is the best option for a morning coffee stop anywhere between Rosemary and Seaside.
A Few Practical Things
The Timpoochee Trail runs 18-plus miles along the length of 30A and is the best way to move between towns without dealing with parking. Bike rentals are available in most communities. The speed limit on 30A through most towns is 35 mph.
Parking in Seaside specifically gets competitive by 10 AM on weekends. Come earlier or come by bike. Most other towns along 30A have easier parking than people expect.
If you're staying overnight, Grayton and Blue Mountain Beach tend to have better rental value than Seaside or Rosemary.
The drive itself on 30A is part of the point. It's two lanes, Gulf on the south side, state forest and dune lakes on the north. Windows down, no particular hurry.

Beach Day Extra
Can't make the longer drive to 30A? Santa Rosa Island is right here. Cross the bridge to Pensacola Beach, turn left at the first light, and drive west through Gulf Islands National Seashore to Fort Pickens. The road narrows down to a strip of island with Gulf on one side and the bay on the other - no buildings, just dunes and water. The road leads through the Santa Rosa Area of the national park toward Navarre.
Opal Beach out here is quieter than anything closer to town. The Timpoochee-adjacent trail runs the whole length of the island, so this stretch is also a solid bike ride if that's your thing.
If you make a right instead, Fort Pickens is a brick fort built in 1834 where Geronimo was held as a prisoner of war. It costs $25 per vehicle to enter the national park, and the beach at Langdon Beach inside the park is significantly less crowded than the main Pensacola Beach strip.
April is the right time for both of these options. The water's warm (kind of - not very warm last weekend), the crowds haven't arrived, and you can still park wherever you want (during the week).
